The Warrego Highway is located in southern Queensland, Australia. It connects coastal centres to the south western areas of the state, and is approximately 750 km in length. It takes its name from the Warrego River, which is the endpoint of the highway. The entire highway is part of the National Highway system linking Darwin and Brisbane: formerly National Highway 54, Queensland began to convert to the alphanumeric system much of Australia had adopted in the early-2000s and is now designated as National Highway A2.

Driving from Brisbane to Darwin on this highway would be 3,423 km and would take about 40 hours driving at the speed limits along the way. It's quite far...

ON THE WALLS OF ATHENS

In 2007 we visited Greece and these photos are some of the graffiti and murals we saw on the walls of central Athens. Below the photos are captions that explain the main point that is being made.

This post is part of the Monday Murals meme.
The sign in the centre reads: "SANTA CLAUS, DON'T WEEP"
On the far right, the writing reads: "WE ARE EVERYWHERE"
The label above reads: "YUSURUM = Flea Market"
The bust of Zeus, head honcho of the ancient Greek pantheon
Old public transport depot walls

Destroy cars, use public transport!
Famed traditional Greek shadow puppets
A mixture of political and sporting slogans, as well as shameless tagging vandalism

SIGN OF THE TIMES

Snapped this sign in Greensborough, an outer suburb of Melbourne. They really like their customers, I must say, ;-). But isn't the script beautiful?

OLD ENGLAND HOTEL, HEIDELBERG

The Old England Hotel in suburban Melbourne was established in 1848. Celebrating its 164 birthday this year the Old England is an iconic part of Heidelberg’s rich and vibrant history. The hotel with its warmth and historical significance has been engrained in the traditions and social landscape of Heidelberg since its foundation.

For the last century the old England hotel has attracted Melburnians as a fashionable place to dine, drink and socialise. Some of the most notable patrons of the day included Heidelberg School of Arts founders: Arthur Streeton, Fredrick McCubin, Tom Roberts and Charles Conder who as young struggling artists would frequent the hotel during the years they were painting the Heidelberg area around 1888. During this time they would meet regularly to share their dreams, stories, struggles and achievements.

RIDE A BIKE

The irony of this sign is the didactic message of a petroleum product multinational espousing messages regarding "better energy solutions", amplified greatly by the graffiti beneath and its "green" advice!

I took the photo at Clifton Hill railway station in Melbourne, yesterday while riding a commuter train. Our trains are bike friendly and many bike riders use the trains for long-haul trips and then ride their bikes at their destination.

LITTLE CREATURES, FREMANTLE

Little Creatures is an Australian brewing company based in Fremantle, Western Australia, originally established in 2000 by the original brewers of the Matilda Bay Brewing Company. The name "Little Creatures" is inspired by a song lyric from the Talking Heads Little Creatures album and refers to the live yeast cells that turn the sugars in malt wort into alcohol.Little Creatures Pty Ltd is owned by Little World Beverages, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lion Nathan (which is itself a wholly owned subsidiary of Kirin).

The Brewery was founded by Howard Cearns (marketing specialist), Nic Trimboli (restaurateur) and Phil Sexton (master brewer), all of whom previously worked with the Matilda Bay Brewing Company. In 1997 Cearns, Trimboli and Sexton discussed the possibility of brewing an american style India Pale Ale. Sexton having worked in the United States and was involved in the development of the BridgePort IPA. Cearns came up with the name after reading about little creatures wandering from ale house to ale house in J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and at the time thinking that it sounded like yeast fermentation. The brewery released its first beer, Little Creatures Pale Ale, in 2000. In 2008 the company established a second brewery in Healesville, Victoria.

The brewery building, was originally constructed to house the Taskforce '87 yachts (Kookaburra) participating in the 1987 America's Cup and subsequently as a crocodile farm before being converted to its current use. The brewery is open to the public and contains a café/restaurant.

NODDING VIOLET

A popular house plant, Streptocarpus is a genus of flowering plants in the family Gesneriaceae (Gesneriads). The flowers are five-petalled, salverform tubes, almost orchid-like in appearance, and hover or arch over the plant. The genus is native to parts of Africa and Madagascar. In the wild, species can be found growing on shaded rocky hillsides or cliffs, on the ground, in rock crevices, and almost anywhere the seed can germinate and grow.

For the home, there are now many hybrids of various colours and forms available. The genus is defined by having a spirally twisted fruit (from Greek via Latin, where strepto = twisted, carpus = fruit - Greek: Στρεπτόκαρπος), although this character is also found in some other Old World genera of Gesneriaceae. Although generally referred to simply as Streptocarpus, or "Streps", one common name is Cape Primrose, referring to the nativity of several species to South Africa and their superficial resemblance to the genus Primula.

I love reading the signs on plants in nurseries as they are a wealth fo information and often have bits and pieces on them that I didn't know. For example, I always referred to this plant as "Streps" and hadn't heard of the term "nodding violet" - a much more poetic one!

PINK LAKE, DIMBOOLA

A few kilometers west of Dimboola, Victoria, next to the Western Highway, you can find Pink Lake. This lake is easily viewed from the rest-stop beside the highway and you can walk down the path to the edge of the lake. As you walk along the path to the lake, you will see yellow gums, buloke trees and paperbarks, giving way to the smaller and very distinctive salt tolerant plants that grow in this unique environment. The pink colour of the water comes from a pigment secreted by microscopic algae.

The intensity of the pink varies with the amount of water in the lake. When the lake is drier more light is reflected from the white crystallised salt reducing the impact of the pink. The salt was commercially harvested from the lake for many years and some of the relics from that time can still be seen near the edge of the lake. Harvesting and selling of Pink Lake Salt is now carried out again.

TASMANIAN TIGER SCULPTURE

This sculpture group in Launceston features a group of extinct Australian animals known as the Tasmanian Tiger (Thylacinus cynocephalus). This animal was the largest known carnivorous marsupial of modern times. It is known as a “tiger” because of its striped back. Native to continental Australia, Tasmania and New Guinea, it is thought to have become extinct in the first half of the 20th century. It was the last extant member of its family, Thylacinidae, although several related species have been found in the fossil record dating back to the early Miocene.

The Tasmanian Tiger had become extremely rare or extinct on the Australian mainland before European settlement of the continent, but it survived on the island of Tasmania along with several other endemic species, including the Tasmanian devil (still common). Intensive hunting of the Tasmanian Tiger encouraged by bounties is generally blamed for its extinction, but other contributing factors may have been disease, the introduction of dogs, and human encroachment into its habitat.

Despite its official classification as extinct, sightings are still reported, though none are proven. Like the tigers and wolves of the Northern Hemisphere, the thylacine was an apex predator. Its closest living relative is thought to be either the Tasmanian devil or the numbat. The thylacine was one of only two marsupials to have a pouch in both sexes (the other being the water opossum). The male thylacine had a pouch that acted as a protective sheath, covering the male’s external reproductive organs while he ran through thick brush. It has been described as a formidable predator because of its ability to survive and hunt prey in extremely sparsely populated areas.

PENNYROYAL VILLAGE, LAUNCESTON

Penny Royal Village is located in Launceston and is a tourism and accommodation complex. A visit to Penny Royal World is like stepping back into the 19th century. Its story is of Andrew Gatenby, an early pioneer of van Dieman's land, and his family. They arrived in 1823 and settled on land between Cressy and Ross on the Isis River, then known as Penny Royal Creek. They built their farmhouse and millhouse there.

Over the years the mill fell into disrepair and, rather than be demolished, the complex task of disassembling and relocating it to an old quarry in the centre of Launceston was carried out. The Penny Royal Gunpowder Mills provide the only complete set of working gunpowder mills in the world. Faithfully built, they depict colonial mills of the early 19th century. There are windmills, water mills, gunpowder mills and model boats.

The surrounding area offers quaint accommodation options, walks along the river gorge and plentiful boating opportunities on the river.
