MELBOURNE SPRING RACING CARNIVAL ROSES

The Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival is the name of an Australian Thoroughbred horse racing series held annually in Melbourne during October and November each year. Although racing in Australia is held every day except Christmas Day, the Group One races in Melbourne are held almost exclusively throughout the carnival, which is traditionally placed between the football and cricket seasons. During the winter (where football is dominant), and summer (where cricket is dominant), racing takes a 'back seat' position in relation to the cricket or football in terms of media coverage and attendances. However, in spring and autumn, the mass media turns its attention to the racing. There is also a Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival, a time where Group One races are also held.

The Victoria Racing Club's meetings attract the most attention from the media and the wider community.
The Victoria Derby is held on the Saturday before the Melbourne Cup. It is a set-weights race for three-year-old horses. There are also other major races held on this day as well, making it the biggest day in racing.
The Melbourne Cup handicap race is held on the first Tuesday in November, and is a public holiday in Victoria, but the Cup is witnessed by those all around Australia as well as internationally.
The VRC Oaks race is held on the Thursday following the Cup. It is a three-year-old fillies race, and traditionally it has been known as 'ladies' day'.
The VRC Stakes day is held on the Saturday following the Oaks, and traditionally it has been known as 'family day'.

The carnival, and particularly the Melbourne Cup attracts the interest of many people otherwise uninterested in horse racing, and special forms of very low-stake gambling are often used for this event. One common form for groups such as office staff is the "sweep", where each participant adds a small fee to a "pot" and draws the name of a horse like a raffle. Prize money is distributed to the person who draws the winning horse (occasionally smaller prizes are awarded to placegetters and the last-placing horse). A more complex and high-stakes form of the sweep is the "Calcutta", often held as a fundraising event for community organisations, which begins as in the sweep (though usually with a much higher initial stake), but which allows ticket holders to trade their tickets through an auction system.

Each major race day over the Melbourne Cup Carnival has a dedicated flower. Men will often wear designated flower in their buttonhole, and coordinate the respective colour with their shirt or tie. Women may also choose to incorporate the flower into their outfit, whether it be inspiration from the colour, wearing as a corsage or a hair accessory. For example, the Pink Rose is the dedicated flower for Crown Oaks Day. Many believe that wearing the right flower can bring good luck...

Here at the Crown Casino, the floral display of the foyer mirrors the Crown Oaks Day dedicated flower, the pink rose. In various other parts of the Casino and hotel similar floral displays feature this special flower.

JABIRU

Jabiru is a town in the Northern Territory of Australia. It was originally built in 1982 as a closed town to house the community living at Jabiru East near the Ranger Uranium Mine eight kilometres away. Both the mine and the town are completely surrounded by Kakadu National Park. At the 2006 census, Jabiru had a population of 1,135. Jabiru Township is thirteen square kilometres in size. The town is owned as freehold by the Director of National Parks and Wildlife, from which a head lease is held by the Jabiru Town Development Authority (JTDA). The JTDA subleases to the mining company, government agencies and private business. The head lease expires in 2021.

The town is named after the bird, Jabiru, or more correctly, the black-necked stork (Ephippiorhynchus asiaticus), which is a tall long-necked wading bird in the stork family. It is a resident species across South and Southeast Asia with a disjunct population in Australia. It lives in wetland habitats where it forages for a wide range of animal prey. Adult birds of both sexes have a heavy bill and are patterned in white and glossy blacks, but the sexes differ in the colour of the iris (male brown and female yellow). In Australia, it is called a jabiru although that name refers to a stork species found in the Americas.

In Jabiru, there is a curious hotel, the Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel, which is located on the eastern side of Kakadu National Park. The unique shape of the hotel reflects the large number of crocodiles found in this National Park. The hotel is a 2 ½ hour drive from Darwin and makes an ideal base to explore Ubirr & Nourlangie rock art galleries and the towering escarpment of Arnhem Land.

CROWN ATRIUM FESTIVITIES

The Atrium at Crown Towers Hotel in Southbank, Melbourne, puts on a Festive Season show every year. This year, the atrium has a spectacular animatronic, lighting and musical display every 30 minutes.

Included is a15 metre 24-hour fully lit Christmas tree, giant Christmas baubles suspended from the ceiling, while Jumbo-sized ornaments at eye level pop open to reveal all of Santa's friends and the merry old gentleman himself. All of this to the strains of well-known carols of the Season.

It is kitsch deluxe, but the kids (and many adults!) thrive on it and all of the shows seem to be very well-attended. Just keep the kiddies well away from the pokie machines in the casino...

OLD ENGLAND HOTEL, HEIDELBERG

The Old England Hotel in suburban Melbourne was established in 1848. Celebrating its 164 birthday this year the Old England is an iconic part of Heidelberg’s rich and vibrant history. The hotel with its warmth and historical significance has been engrained in the traditions and social landscape of Heidelberg since its foundation.

For the last century the old England hotel has attracted Melburnians as a fashionable place to dine, drink and socialise. Some of the most notable patrons of the day included Heidelberg School of Arts founders: Arthur Streeton, Fredrick McCubin, Tom Roberts and Charles Conder who as young struggling artists would frequent the hotel during the years they were painting the Heidelberg area around 1888. During this time they would meet regularly to share their dreams, stories, struggles and achievements.

LITTLE CREATURES, FREMANTLE

Little Creatures is an Australian brewing company based in Fremantle, Western Australia, originally established in 2000 by the original brewers of the Matilda Bay Brewing Company. The name "Little Creatures" is inspired by a song lyric from the Talking Heads Little Creatures album and refers to the live yeast cells that turn the sugars in malt wort into alcohol.Little Creatures Pty Ltd is owned by Little World Beverages, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lion Nathan (which is itself a wholly owned subsidiary of Kirin).

The Brewery was founded by Howard Cearns (marketing specialist), Nic Trimboli (restaurateur) and Phil Sexton (master brewer), all of whom previously worked with the Matilda Bay Brewing Company. In 1997 Cearns, Trimboli and Sexton discussed the possibility of brewing an american style India Pale Ale. Sexton having worked in the United States and was involved in the development of the BridgePort IPA. Cearns came up with the name after reading about little creatures wandering from ale house to ale house in J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and at the time thinking that it sounded like yeast fermentation. The brewery released its first beer, Little Creatures Pale Ale, in 2000. In 2008 the company established a second brewery in Healesville, Victoria.

The brewery building, was originally constructed to house the Taskforce '87 yachts (Kookaburra) participating in the 1987 America's Cup and subsequently as a crocodile farm before being converted to its current use. The brewery is open to the public and contains a café/restaurant.
