MUSIC

Now that the weather is bleak and cold in the Southern Hemisphere, nothing better than being indoors and enjoying some live music! Fortunately, in Melbourne we have a vibrant music scene and there is no dearth of music of all kinds to enjoy in a variety of venues.

BLUEBIRD

This is a photo taken by Eileen of the Saturday Critters meme site. Her photo was marred by an obscuring twig in front of the bluebird's face. I've taken the liberty to cut the twig and restore our view to the critter's face with the help of Photoshop.
Happy Mother's Day, Eileen!

TETRAPTYCH

And now for something slightly different... The last couple of weeks I was busy completing a series of four paintings that were inspired by photographs. The photographs are given in the four upper panels, and they merge with the paintings in the panels below. A mosaic of images and ideas, colours and emotional responses. Tell me what you think!

HAND

"Our hand, that marvel of evolution, the maker of wondrous things, the destroyer of beauty is equally capable of giving a caress as well as of delivering a fatal blow. The hand that writes poems in exquisite calligraphy, is as adept at signing death warrants. The hand that builds is also the hand that demolishes, that which takes as well as that which gives. The hand which plays beautiful music, can also beat the drums of war..."

QUAGGA

The quagga (Equus quagga quagga) was a plains zebra that lived in South Africa until becoming extinct late in the 19th century. It was long thought to be a distinct species, but early genetic studies have supported it being a subspecies of plains zebra. A more recent study suggested that it was merely the southernmost ecotype of the species. The name was derived from its call, which sounded like "kwa-ha-ha".

The quagga is believed to have been around 257 cm long and 125–135 cm tall at the shoulder. It was distinguished from other zebras by its limited pattern of primarily brown and white stripes, mainly on the front part of the body. The rear was brown and without stripes, and therefore more horse-like. The distribution of stripes varied considerably between individuals.

Little is known about the quagga's behaviour, but it may have gathered into herds of 30–50. Quaggas were said to be wild and lively, yet were also considered more docile than Burchell's zebra. They were once found in great numbers in the Karoo of Cape Province and the southern part of the Orange Free State in South Africa. After the Dutch settlement of South Africa began, the quagga was heavily hunted as it competed with domesticated animals for forage. Some were taken to zoos in Europe, but breeding programmes were unsuccessful.

The last wild population lived in the Orange Free State, and the quagga was extinct in the wild by 1878. The last captive specimen died in Amsterdam on 12 August 1883. Only one quagga was ever photographed alive and only 23 skins are preserved today. In 1984, the quagga was the first extinct animal to have its DNA analysed, and the Quagga Project is trying to recreate the phenotype of hair coat pattern and related characteristics by selectively breeding Burchell's zebras.

AUSTRALIA I.D.

I was asked to do a little design project as an exercise in Photoshop technique, which identified the country I call home. The result is this "Country I.D. Mosaic" for Australia. Can you do a similar one for the country you call home?

SPANISH BLUEBELL

Hyacinthoides hispanica (syn. Endymion hispanicus or Scilla hispanica), the Spanish bluebell, is a spring-flowering bulbous perennial native to the Iberian Peninsula. It is one of around 11 species in the genus Hyacinthoides, others including the common bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) in northwestern Europe, and the Italian bluebell (Hyacinthoides italica) further east in the Mediterranean region.

It is distinguished from the common bluebell by its paler, larger blue flowers, more erect flower stem (raceme), broader leaves, blue anthers (where the common bluebell has creamy-white ones) and little or no scent compared to the strong fragrant scent of the northern species. The Spanish bluebell is also cultivated as a garden plant, and several named cultivars exist with flowers in various shades of white, pink and blue.

I've processed the photo in Photoshop using a variety of filters to give it a slightly painterly look.
