Thousands of people across Australia's southeast were asked to evacuate their homes on Friday, including many country towns close to overflowing rivers and dams, after two days of incessant rains triggered flash flooding and fast-moving waters burst river banks. Large parts of Victoria state, southern New South Wales and the northern regions of the island state of Tasmania were pounded by an intense weather system with some taking more than a month's worth of rain since late Wednesday. The town of Rochester in central Victoria was inundated as you can see in the photo above.

WASHINGTON DC, USA

In the last week, Washington has been in the news much more so than usual, and with good reason. The USA elections have been and gone and the 46th President of the United States of America has been announced in the person of Joe Biden. "United", I think is the operative word, since these past four years divisions, disharmony, incitement to discord, violence and public unrest have been the order of the day.

For me, the interesting part was that scores of Republicans spoke out and supported Biden both pre-election and post-election. It made me recall Edmund Burke's dictum: 'The only thing necessary for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing,' Ultimately, the goal of an election campaign in the world's most influential and powerful democracy is to elect an honest, fair, logical and patriotic person whose goal is to unite all people in the country in order to achieve benefits for all citizens.

Both Democrats and Republicans have in their ranks 'good men' and in Biden's successful candidature for president, it seems that these 'good men' prevailed, and not 'evil'. Now Biden has in front of him a momentous task: Unite the divided, heal the harm done, deal with the unchecked COVID pandemic, deal with the numerous economic and diplomatic problems, and rule the country with dignity, compassion, fairness, kindness, common decency, and respect for all. It is Biden's hands now to make the USA great again and to make his country respected abroad again.

Six months after Victoria declared a state of disaster to deal with the summer's fires, the dramatic legislation has again come into effect to deal with the "public health bushfire" of coronavirus. It came into effect at 6:00pm on Sunday and can be in place for at least a month. It gives police and emergency services much broader powers to enforce new coronavirus restrictions, including the Melbourne-wide curfew every night. It also gives authorities the ability to suspend Acts of Parliament and take possession of properties...

I took a train to the country as I had business there and was surprised by how few people were travelling, despite the easing of restrictions...

UNUSUAL...

Not long ago, this was a common sight across our skies with many a plane flying by every hour. Now, I had to snap this uncommon sight in the sky. COVID has certainly changed many things we used to take for granted...

BARCELONA, CATALONIA

Barcelona is the capital and largest city of Catalonia, an autonomous community in Spain, and the country's second most populous municipality, with a population of 1.6 million within city limits. Its urban area extends beyond the administrative city limits with a population of around 4.7 million people, being the sixth most populous urban area in the European Union after Paris, London, Madrid, the Ruhr area and Milan.

It is the largest metropolis on the Mediterranean Sea, located on the coast between the mouths of the rivers Llobregat and Besòs, and bounded to the west by the Serra de Collserola mountain range, the tallest peak of which is 512 metres high. Founded as a Roman city, in the Middle Ages Barcelona became the capital of the County of Barcelona. After merging with the Kingdom of Aragon, Barcelona continued to be an important city in the Crown of Aragon as an economic and administrative centre of this Crown and the capital of the Principality of Catalonia.

Barcelona has a rich cultural heritage and is today an important cultural centre and a major tourist destination. Particularly renowned are the architectural works of Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Domènech i Montaner, which have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The headquarters of the Union for the Mediterranean is located in Barcelona. The city is known for hosting the 1992 Summer Olympics as well as world-class conferences and expositions and also many international sport tournaments. Barcelona is one of the world's leading tourist, economic, trade fair and cultural centres, and its influence in commerce, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities.

The recent events where bloodshed and anger marred the Catalan independence vote in northern Spain on Sunday, saddened me as I remembered the wonderful times I spent in this city in the past. To see riot police storming polling stations to seize ballot boxes, beating and firing rubber bullets at would-be voters was mind-boggling! Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau said hundreds of people had been injured in "police charges against the defenceless population". The Catalonia regional government's said more than 800 people required medical attention. A terrible day for Barcelona and Catalonia and for everyone who believes that violence does not resolve anything...
