Malva neglecta is an annual growing to 0.6 m. It is also known as common mallow in the United States and also buttonweed, cheeseplant, cheeseweed, dwarf mallow and roundleaf mallow. This plant is often consumed as a food, with its leaves, stalks and seed all being considered edible. This is especially true of the seeds, which contain 21% protein and 15.2% fat.

PINCUSHION PROTEA

Leucospermum (Pincushion, Pincushion Protea or Leucospermum) is a genus of about 50 species of flowering plants in the family Proteaceae, native to Zimbabwe and South Africa, where they occupy a variety of habitats, including scrub, forest, and mountain slopes. They are evergreen shrubs (rarely small trees) growing to 0.5-5 m tall. The leaves are spirally arranged, tough and leathery, simple, linear to lanceolate, 2-12 cm long and 0.5-3 cm broad, with a serrated margin or serrated at the leaf apex only.

The flowers are produced in dense inflorescences, which have large numbers of prominent styles, which inspires the name. The genus is closely related in evolution and appearance to the Australian genus Banksia. Shown here is a Leucospermum patersonii hybrid. An excellent ornamental hardy shrub for most well-drained soils and full sun positions. It is a relatively fast growing landscape shrub for coastal or inland gardens. The two-tone orange-red flowers make a great long stemmed cut flower. Grown commercially.

WASHINGTON DC, USA

In the last week, Washington has been in the news much more so than usual, and with good reason. The USA elections have been and gone and the 46th President of the United States of America has been announced in the person of Joe Biden. "United", I think is the operative word, since these past four years divisions, disharmony, incitement to discord, violence and public unrest have been the order of the day.

For me, the interesting part was that scores of Republicans spoke out and supported Biden both pre-election and post-election. It made me recall Edmund Burke's dictum: 'The only thing necessary for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing,' Ultimately, the goal of an election campaign in the world's most influential and powerful democracy is to elect an honest, fair, logical and patriotic person whose goal is to unite all people in the country in order to achieve benefits for all citizens.

Both Democrats and Republicans have in their ranks 'good men' and in Biden's successful candidature for president, it seems that these 'good men' prevailed, and not 'evil'. Now Biden has in front of him a momentous task: Unite the divided, heal the harm done, deal with the unchecked COVID pandemic, deal with the numerous economic and diplomatic problems, and rule the country with dignity, compassion, fairness, kindness, common decency, and respect for all. It is Biden's hands now to make the USA great again and to make his country respected abroad again.

MELIA

The China tree (Melia azedarach), also called chinaberry, bead tree, and Persian lilac, is an ornamental deciduous Asian tree with round yellow fruits, often cultivated in many tropical and warm temperate areas. The adult tree has a rounded crown, and commonly measures attains a height of 7-12 metres, however in exceptional circumstances M. azedarach can attain a height of 45 metres.

The flowers are small and highly fragrant, with five pale purple or lilac petals, growing in clusters. The fruit is a drupe, marble-sized, light yellow at maturity, hanging on the tree all winter, and gradually becoming wrinkled and almost white. The leaves are up to 50 cm long, alternate, long-petioled, 2 or 3 times compound (odd-pinnate); the leaflets are dark green above and lighter green below, with serrate margins.

It is a common ornamental street tree in Melbourne, but it must noted that fruits are poisonous to humans if eaten in quantity. However, like those of the Yew tree, these toxins are not harmful to birds, who gorge themselves on the fruit, eventually reaching a "drunken" state. Leaves have been used as a natural insecticide to keep with stored food, but must not be eaten as they are highly poisonous to humans. Today it is considered an invasive species as its seeds sprout easily and are transported by birds far and wide.
