ANGEL FRESCO

This angel is a detail from a fresco in the Bulgarian Rila Monastery, the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. It is situated in the southwestern Rila Mountains, 117 km south of the capital Sofia in the deep valley of the Rilska River at an elevation of 1,147 m above sea level. The frescoes, finished in 1846, are the work of many masters from Bansko, Samokov and Razlog, including the famous brothers Zahari Zograf and Dimitar Zograf.

  1. Love the colors of this work! For a fresco it has much more shading and details than the frescos of the Middle Ages. We were a few times in Bulgaria, but during the communistic regime. So, we couldn't travel around freely like we could now. Many thanks for sharing this stunning beauty with SEASONS!
I looked at your interesting "biggie" of 4 years ago. Am catching on there are many sides of you. I had no idea of this one - can see that it took a lot of work, as well as skills of painting with likeness!Superb work!

  3. A lovely image. Do you know which angel this is supposed to be? The monasteries of Bulgaria and Romania have fascinating art; lucky you that you've gotten to visit. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
