CRUISING THE BOSPHORUS

The Bosphorus or Bosporus (Ancient Greek: Βόσπορος, Bósporos; Turkish: Boğaziçi) is a natural strait and internationally-significant waterway located in northwestern Turkey that forms part of the continental boundary between Europe and Asia, and separates Asian Turkey from European Turkey. The world's narrowest strait used for international navigation, the Bosporus connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara, and, by extension via the Dardanelles, the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas. Most of the shores of the strait are heavily settled, straddled by the city of Istanbul's metropolitan population of 17 million inhabitants extending inland from both coasts. Together with the Dardanelles (Hellespont) strait, the Bosphorus forms the Turkish Straits.

A Bosphorus cruise on one of the many cruise boats sailing up and down the straits is a must when in Istanbul. Numerous sights on both sides of the straits can be seen and the rich history of the City unfolds before one's eyes. You'll get to see the domes and minarets of Old Istanbul, Leander's Tower (Kız Kulesi), the magnificent façade of Dolmabahçe Palace, the sprawling new districts of office towers, and the sweep of the Bosphorus to the north and the Sea of Marmara to the south.

  2. Sailing the Bosphorus was one of the highlights of a Black Sea cruise we did a few years ago, and your photos brought back happy memories. It is sad that cruise companies are discontinuing Istanbul as a stop during this time of strife there.

  7. Wow lovely post. I like all the images. These images are stunning and beautiful. Istanbul is the largest city of Turkey. Besides it's one of the 5 largest metropolitan areas in the world. It joins the 2 continents Europe and Asia. Hiring a local tour guide is a good way to experience the beauty of city Istanbul. Enjoy your tour with istanbuldaily-citytours.com.
