Cymbidium, is a genus of 52 evergreen species in the orchid family Orchidaceae. One of its first descriptions come from Olof Swartz in 1799. The name is derived from the Greek word kumbos, meaning 'hole, cavity'. It refers to the form of the base of the lip. The genus is abbreviated Cym in horticultural trade.

These orchids are just coming into bloom in our garden now and it is always convenient to be able to pick these long-lasting, spectacular blooms for use as cut flowers inside the house. They last for several weeks in a cool room.

This post is part of the Floral Friday Fotos meme.

  1. Orchids are perhaps the sexiest flowers. The only way we can grow them here is inside. Your photos are just beautiful.

  2. How wonderful to have these in your garden and be able to cut them for flower arrangements!

  3. Lovely!

I love to hear from you, so please comment. I appreciate constructive criticism as it improves my skills as an amateur photographer.
