AUTUMN FRUIT

On a walk in the parklands this week I found some wild fruit growing on trees and bushes. The most unfamiliar to Northern Hemisphere dwellers perhaps may be the lilly-pilly, Syzygium smithii, (formerly Acmena smithii). This is a summer-flowering, winter-fruiting evergreen tree, belonging to the myrtle family Myrtaceae.

It shares the common name "lilly-pilly" with several other plants, however in New Zealand, it is commonly known as 'monkey apple'. It is planted as shrubs or hedgerows, and features: rough, woody bark; cream and green smooth, waxy leaves; flushes of pink new growth; and white to maroon edible berries. Unpruned, it will grow about 3–5 m tall in the garden.

  2. The berries are a beautiful colour - something I always look for in a plant. I don't know if there is anything similar here in the Pacific Northwest. I'll have to investigate!

  3. Had just made blackberry pie bars on Friday! The only ones I don't know are the lilly- pilly. Is their taste on the tart side?
About your comment: whoa, I would not want the Swiss system in the USA - it may end up in civil war - people are already over-participating (actually crossing boundaries in a flagrant way and screaming their head off in a very threatening way -I know it's not a nice way to say it, but it's reality in some parts of the country, like California. That's why it took so long for the cities to start opting out of the border issue).
In the case of Holland, a very different mentality - a figure head still works because too many people are satisfied with it. It may be another generation before it changes:)
I usually refrain from politics on my blogs, but ...I'm not for being silent when a topic comes up, lol. Thanking you for sharing these berries with All Seasons and have a bright Autumn week!

  7. Such luscious looking berries, I hadn't heard of lilly-pilly until today when our other MM participant from Oz, Jill, included them in her post too! What are the odds?
