We've received quite a lot of Spring rains the past couple of days in Melbourne. Although it was much needed, we also had some unfortunate flooding in some suburbs, high winds with trees uprooted and interruption to the electricity supply in some neighbourhoods. In the western suburbs there was even a mini tornado that went through and caused some havoc.

Australia has nearly 200 known species of snake, only 25 of which are considered potentially deadly. Common snakes in the Melbourne area and surrounding suburbs include the Tiger Snake, Eastern Brown Snake, Copperhead Snake, White-Lipped Snake, Small-Eyed Snake and Red-Bellied Black Snake. There are over 27 types of snake in Victoria and a number of these are venomous, including the tiger snake, the copperhead, the brown snake and the red-bellied black snake.

This tiger snake (venmous!) was seen in the Darebin Parklands, in suburban Melbourne, about 5 km from the city centre. I have seen snakes a number of times, in the Parklands and elsewhere, but fortunately these encounters have been innocent enough. While seeing a snake may be an intimidating experience, they are typically shy creatures and most will try to avoid confrontation with humans and quickly slither away (how quickly they can move is indeed a sobering experience).

Albury-Wodonga is the broad settlement incorporating the twin Australian cities of Albury and Wodonga, which are separated geographically by the Murray River and politically by a state border: Albury on the north of the river is part of New South Wales, while Wodonga on the south bank is in Victoria.

This is an aerial photo I took on a flight from Brisbane to Melbourne and Albury is the city on the left of the photo, while Wodonga is on the right of the photo. It pays to have a window seat!
